How to Move to Spain: A Step-by-Step Guide for Expats
11/20/2025

Moving to Spain sounds exciting and it is, but when I actually made the move, I quickly realized how much there is to figure out beyond the dream.
Before moving, I spent hours searching for information, and trying to understand how everything worked. Still, once I arrived in Spain, it felt like everything came at me at once: paperwork, housing, healthcare, and learning how daily life really works here. I often thought, why isn’t there one clear place that explains this in a simple, honest way?
That’s exactly why I started The Golden Move.
If you’re thinking about moving abroad to Spain, this guide walks you through the main steps, without overcomplicating things, so you can feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
Step 1: Get Clear on Why You Want to Move to Spain
Before focusing on visas and logistics, it’s important to get clear on why you want to move to Spain in the first place.
Are you looking for a slower lifestyle? Better weather? A new start? Or are you planning to work remotely or study? Spain can look very different depending on where you live and how you plan to spend your time.
Knowing your reason for moving will help you make better decisions later — from choosing a city to understanding which visa might suit you.
Step 2: Understand Your Visa Options
Visa rules can feel confusing, especially when you’re just starting out. Depending on your nationality and situation, you may need a visa to live in Spain long-term.
Common options include:
Work visas
Student visas
Digital nomad or remote work visas
Non-lucrative visas
My biggest advice here: start researching early and always check official sources. Visa processes often take longer than expected, and having clarity upfront will save you a lot of stress later on.
Step 3: Plan Your Budget and Cost of Living
Spain is often more affordable than other European countries, but costs can vary a lot depending on where you live.
Think about:
Rent and deposits
Utilities and internet
Groceries and daily expenses
Health insurance
Transportation
Creating a realistic budget before you move helps you choose the right location and avoid financial surprises once you arrive.
Step 4: Finding a Place to Live in Spain
Finding housing wasn’t easy, and it took me a while to finally find a place. After searching on different platforms, I eventually found my room through local Facebook groups. Idealista is useful as well, but Facebook groups ended up being the most effective for me.
Many rentals in Spain move quickly and are easier to secure once you’re actually here.
Step 5: Get Your Paperwork in Order
Spain loves paperwork, and being prepared makes everything easier. Some of the most common things you’ll need include:
A valid passport and visa (if required)
NIE (foreigner identification number)
Empadronamiento (local registration)
A Spanish bank account
Health insurance
Keep copies of everything, both digitally and on paper. It sounds simple, but it will save you time and frustration later.
Step 6: Setting Up Daily Life in Spain
Once you arrive, it’s the small things that help you feel settled:
Opening a bank account
Getting a local SIM card or mobile plan
Registering for healthcare
Learning basic Spanish phrases
You don’t need to have everything perfect right away. Take it step by step and allow yourself time to adjust.
Step 7: Adjusting to Expat Life
Moving abroad isn’t just about logistics, it’s emotional too. Culture shock, homesickness, and moments of doubt are completely normal.
Spain has a slower pace of life, different routines, and strong local traditions. It takes time to adapt, and that’s okay. Be patient with yourself and allow the experience to unfold.
Final Thoughts
Moving to Spain was one of the biggest changes I’ve ever made. Not everything went smoothly, but every challenge taught me something valuable.
You don’t need a perfect plan to move abroad, just a clear starting point and the willingness to learn as you go.
At The Golden Move, I share what I’ve learned so you don’t have to figure everything out alone.
